LISTENING ACTIVITIES

Type of activity: Intensive listening

‘’STRIP LYRICS’’ idea adapted from:

Aim: Recognize grammatical word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc) recognize grammatical tenses (past, present, present perfect, future), getting the main idea.

Level: Elementary

Theoretical framework: The listener must be familiar with past, present and future structures.

Equipment or devices used: CD player and speakers.

Organization: The activity will be done in the classroom in groups of four students.

Time: 6o minutes including the follow up.

Procedure:

· Students are grouped in teams of four.

· They listen to the song ‘’Cool’’ by Gwen Stephanie. Each time they listen to a specific feature called by the teacher they raise their hands; for example words such as verbs or adjectives or grammar structures such as present, past or future.

· They are given a set of scrambled lyrics of the song “Cool” by Gwen Stephanie.

· As they listen to the song, they need to put the lyrics in order on the floor, all the participants must collaborate.

· Listen again to verify the order and make any changes if they were wrong.

· Listen again and sing along.

· Follow up: Teacher elicits information from the song by asking: what is the situation described in the song? Were they lovers or just friends? Now, who is married? What did you think happen in the past with this couple? Why did the break up?

· Students can be assigned for homework to write the story as they imagine it.

Material used: Big strips of lyrics, one set for each team.

Level: elementary

Theoretical framework: the listener must be familiar with common situations of real life as well as fantasy, as these stories are written basically in past tense, the listener should have a previous knowledge of this structure.

Equipment or devices used: CD player or any

Organization: Each student will choose a story to listen in a self access or at home, they will be given a limit time to finish and will be encourage to listen and engage in the activity.

Time: Around sixty minutes of listening plus the reporting stage.

· ANN OF GREEN GABLES, Oxford bookworms. Stage 2. ( to practice past tense)

· The coldest place on earth. Oxford bookworms. Stage 1 (to practice past tense)

· King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. level 2 ( to practice, present, past and future)
